New Music Project Kids

Posted by APATA Published By NZ On Air | Apr 7, 2024

The contestable NZ On Air model is unique in the world. Formed in 1989, with functions set out in the Broadcasting Act, NZ On Air invest in authentic New Zealand stories and songs. This is public media content that reflects cultural identity, which in turn helps build social cohesion, inclusion and connection.

NZ On Air investment strategy published in April 2023 replaces the NZ Media Fund Strategy which was implemented in 2017. This strategy takes a more holistic approach to cultivating the sector, balancing investments in research and insights, talent development, content creation, distribution, and enhancing the discoverability of funded content.

“Our strategy is built upon fundamental principles of public media. These encompass enhancing the culture of Aotearoa New Zealand, expanding the variety and inclusivity of local content accessible to New Zealanders, guaranteeing that content is easily accessible, strengthening social cohesion, and promoting well-informed discussions”.

What is New Music Project Kids?

New Music Kids is funding ranging from $11,000 and $44,000 (including the Artist Creation Fee) that is available for multi-song children’s music projects, with NZ On Air operating on an 80% reimbursement basis. This means that the music company/applicant must co-invest a minimum of 20% of the costs of completing the Project.

As of January 2024, the mandatory Artist Creation Fee (ACF) which amounts to up to 10% of your total NZ On Air funding, will be applied in addition to your grant and disbursed exclusively in the final drawdown. The ACF covers creative work provided by the artist for the funded project. For example, if your funding commitment is $40,000, the addition of the ACF will bring the project’s total NZ On Air funding to $44,000.

Third-party NZ based professional music company involvement with your Project or self-managed artist’s proven track record for releasing, marketing, and promoting a project is mandatory.

Confirmation of the third-party NZ based professional music companies’ involvement will be required in writing to go alongside your funding application.

Where the self-managed artists/contracting party will be responsible for releasing, marketing and promoting the project, NZ On Air requires you to provide as part of your application a detailed history of relevant releases along with the marketing, promotion and broadcast outcomes (i.e. streaming and viewing numbers) of each release in addition to any notable achievements of such releases.
