Now in its fifth year, the Australian Theatre Festival NYC 2024 New Play Award will celebrate two new plays or musicals with distinct Australian voices. The award offers a total cash prize of $20,000 USD for two unproduced, full-length plays or musicals written by Australian writers.

A common thread across everyone’s story has demonstrated how communities have come together for arts education and rallied behind each other to make a difference, and developed 'safe spaces' for students of all ages to learn, grow and harness their talents and passions for the performing arts.

As we draw to a close a successful 2023, we wanted to take this opportunity to congratulate you all on this year’s achievements.

From exams, eisteddfods, and showcases through to end of year recitals and concerts, often we have little time to stop and reflect on how much we have given and delivered throughout the year working with our students. It is a timely reminder that through it all and amongst the busy schedules you have consistently showed up, supported and cheered from the sidelines, encouraged student learning and development in their practice and performance.
.
As we head into the festive season to enjoy time with family and friends, produce a joyful Christmas and take in some much needed rest and relaxation, quickly 2024 will be upon us and we’ll be on the go all over again. Let’s be honest we enjoy the break but being on the go creating performance is our happy place!

So with a BIG thank you to the super users who are always there to support us, the early members who have been with us from the beginning and to all the incredible performing arts teachers who make APATA what it is, we look forward to working with you all again in 2024.

@emmalouisepursey has over 25 years experience in the Suzuki Method of Actor Training and has adapted it into her Integrated Actor Training approach to encourage more natural alignments of the body, focusing on safe technique and longevity of practice.

She trained for ten years with Frank Theatre under John Nobbs and Jacqui Carroll as well as masterclasses with Okubo Noriaki (Suzuki Company of Toga), Ichiro Nakayama (SCOT) and Ellen Lauren (SITI).

APATA was fortunate enough to catch up with Julia Creek-based Amy Tinning in Brisbane to present her with our 2023 APATA National Performing Arts Teacher of the Year award. Amy was attending BPAC, where she was supporting two of her outback dance students, Lucy and Madeline.

Acknowledging not only the amazing teamwork of her Deputy Principal Tammy Gordon and Student Teacher Hannah Gronold, but Amy also recognises the families, students and communities who are entwined in her school, @branches.performingarts

“This award is a huge honour and I must say it’s not a single handed effort. Many hands, hearts and heads have banded together to bring my vision to life over the past 9 years. This award is a very special way to honour all who have played their part in making our school so great.”

Leading the way in regional performing arts, Amy Tinning at Branches Performing Arts based in Northwest Queensland embraces and practices dance ‘no matter where you are’.

Amy is committed to instilling a love of dance and the performing arts in her region and beyond providing quality dance education in a positive, supportive and nurturing environment whether you are in the studio or online undertaking the Distance Dance Program.

Amy’s leadership in dance across the outback is beyond what most of us experience as a teacher with her studio classes teaching 300 students across several remote communities – Hughenden, Richmond, Cloncurry, Julia Creek, Winton, Longreach and Barcaldine incorporating 84 scheduled classes, 80 private coaching sessions for students far reaching in the Northern Territory, Outback Queensland and Northern New South Wales with a teaching team online or on road covering 2,000km every fortnight.

For the children and families based in the great outback of our nation living and working on stations and in remote communities, Amy Tinning has introduced accessible culture as well as widened horizons as to future careers.

Why are the Arts important, especially in creating cultural connection?

It is a very visual and tangible representation of a culture’s beliefs and its values. It’s very easy to understand what happens in your household and you can connect some of those practices by learning the art form, says Deepa Mani, Founder and Artistic Director of @chandralayadance

To understand where you come from and who you are, it's the perfect tool to help you be grounded as an individual. Art plays a big past as the voice or channel when having some of those very challenging conversations and cuts through those cultural stereotypes that we face every day.

A child who is also a person of colour shouldn’t feel different to others. They should be very proud of their heritage and where they come from. But how will they feel proud of it if we don’t give them the opportunity to help them understand that heritage?
