Women’s Circus
Posted by Team APATA | Jun 23, 2022
Scrolling through our socials recently we came across a fantastic video from Women’s Circus, a not for profit feminist arts organisation based in the Drill Hall in West Footscray and we just had to learn more.
Where footy and circus collide
“Flying Shot” is a fun-filled half-hour show based on the fictional champion footy team ‘The Eternal Flames’. Created as something that could be performed at footy ovals the show’s original concept was the vision of Creative Producer Antonella Casella. It was a chance for keen Women’s Circus members to tackle the challenge of bringing footy and circus together.
The team trained with the women’s team from Sunshine North Football Club, attended an AFLW match and held a Q & A session with VFLW coach Lisa-Kiwi Roper as part of the three-week show development.
Women’s Circus Membership
Offering a year round program of community, circus and performance training Women’s Circus promotes a range of classes to suit kids, women and anyone who belongs to a marginalised gender.
Some classes are available for a test drive and Annual membership pricing encourages inclusivity and access. Membership prices and FAQ – HERE
If I was a member I’d be signing up for the POW (circus for 40+) classes for sure as it is something that does not involve knitting or salsa. Not that there is anything wrong with these activities but discovering that my 40-something body could maybe learn to tumble and hold someone up would make me feel strong and capable, not to mention the fun I’d have trying!
“Your Annual Membership gives you access to class enrolment, creative opportunities, free and discounted tickets, as well as exclusive member only events. It also supports those who face social, cultural and financial barriers to access our programs by providing subsidised and sponsored places in our Community and Training Programs.”

For Women’s Circus members’ there is also a range of On Demand videos.

“The accessibility of the Women’s Circus facilities and the expert support and ingenuity of the trainer enables me to take more risks and forge new connections between my body and brain.”
