Andrew Lloyd Webber’s, Phantom of the Opera will be the first production to welcome back audiences to Broadway.
After a 19-month hiatus Broadway’s longest-running production opens 22 October 2021 and “Phans” will be watching and waiting with baited breath as the anticipated opening date is, of course, subject to approval of the NY State Department of Health and Governor Cuomo based on Covid 19 cases and vaccination rates.
In the UK Phantom will be on stage from 27 July 2021 with the West End back to a new normal with other popular productions in full swing.
- Phantom of the Opera opened in the West End in 1986 and on Broadway in 1988
- The Broadway production has played 13,370 performances
- Norm Lewis made history by becoming the first black actor to don the Phantom’s mask on Broadway in 2014 [Robert Guillaume was the first black actor to play the role, when he took over for Michael Crawford in the Los Angeles production in 1990]
- Lucy St Louis will star as Christine Daaé at the UK’s Her Majesty’s Theatre, July 2021. This is the first time a black actor has starred in the role in either London or on Broadway. You can fell her excitement in the video below – we dare you not to cry!
