Michael Cassel Group – Casting Search

The team at Michael Cassel Group are currently on the search for boys to play the roles of Little Michael Jackson and/or Little Marlon Jackson in their upcoming production of MJ The Musical.  They are to portray these roles in the period of the Jackson Five when Michael Jackson was 10 years old.

Boys aged within 9 – 12 years old that are best suited to the demands of the material for the stage production.  Casting for these roles will be 4 x boys for each role so there are 8 opportunities available for the musical.

SHOW

He is one of the greatest entertainers of all time. Now, Michael Jackson’s unique and unparalleled artistry is heading to Australia in the multiple Tony Award®-winning new musical MJ.

Centred around the making of his 1992 Dangerous World Tour, MJ goes beyond the singular moves and signature sound of the star, offering a rare look at the creative mind and collaborative spirit that catapulted Jackson into legendary status, and features more than 25 of Michael Jackson’s greatest hits from across his career.

MJ is directed and choreographed by Royal Ballet Associate Artist Christopher Wheeldon OBE who won the Tony® Award for Best Choreography of a Musical for MJ, and is written by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, (Ruined, Sweat).

Seen by more than a million people on Broadway, MJ was nominated for 10 Tony® Awards, winning four including Best Choreography, and Best Actor in a Musical for the show’s original Broadway star, Myles Frost.

MJ opened on Broadway in February 2021 while a US tour began performances in Chicago in August 2023. A London production will begin in March 2024 with a production in Hamburg opening in December this year.

DATES

Rehearsals will commence in January 2025 and the Australian production will open at the Sydney Lyric Theatre in March 2025. All dates are subject to change in Producer’s sole discretion.

TERM

Length of contract will be dependent on the child’s continued height, vocal and other suitability for the role. All successful artists will be engaged in accordance with the Michael Cassel Group Performers Collective Agreement 2020-2024. A copy of the MCG PCA is available upon request. Artists not prepared to be engaged on these terms should not audition.

AUDITIONS

The audition process and dates are subject to change.

Auditions will may include a combination of preliminary self-tape auditions, in person “workshop-style” group auditions and individual Zoom auditions with the casting and creative panel.

PLEASE NOTE: Auditions will be recorded and photographed for casting purposes.

SUBMISSIONS

Accepting submissions from artists who are residents of Australia or New Zealand.

All submissions must be made through castingcloud.com with submissions not accepted via email or Showcast.

You will be required to set up a new account and complete registration to submit your application.

All auditions are by invitation only. All audition material will be made available via the Michael Cassel Group website, via a password protected page. Please note only those successful in gaining an invitation will be contacted further and artists may not necessarily be invited to be seen for roles which they have submitted.

Character Breakdown

Many of the characters in MJ are portrayals of real people and the ethnicity listed in the character breakdown is that of the real person. We invite artists to consider their comfort with playing the ethnicity of the character when deciding whether to submit. Ages listed should be considered as the ‘playing age’ range.
