La Boite Theatre’s HWY: A PIPELINE FOR NEW WORK & IDEAS
Posted by Team APATA | Jun 25, 2020
Brisbane’s La Boite Theatre is offering new opportunities through their pioneering HWY program to support local theatre-makers and boost artist employment in Queensland. The new HWY offering will provide six paid opportunities, including a 12-month commission for a local playwright or group of writers, a 6-month opportunity for interstate collaborators to develop a new work or an existing idea, and four 3-month development opportunities for artists or companies to seed new work for any one of La Boite’s spaces.
Applications will be open from now until Monday, 13 July 2020, with the application requirements and process differing per opportunity.
Successful applicants will receive a fee for their work, as well as comprehensive artistic, producing, administrative and production support during the development period. La Boite is offering $15,000 for the 12-month playwright commission, $5,000 for the 6-month interstate collaboration and $2,500 per 3-month development opportunity for artists or companies.
HWY is La Boite’s annual development program, which provides opportunities for Australian artists to lead, participate and engage in the development of new theatre, ideas and conversations with audiences.
HWY is the journey a work takes before reaching its destination, La Boite’s main stages.
Their brand-new HWY model provides a pipeline of new work through the commissioning of everything from fresh ideas through to full-length plays. This includes La Boite’s Associate Artists, Assistant Creatives and Artists in Residence; a cohort of diverse theatre-makers who work with La Boite over a 12-24-month period.
This feeds directly into the HWY audience offering, which introduces audiences to La Boite’s development of new work through showings, readings, pitches, workshops, conversations, and more. La Boite invites art lovers of all stripes to join the conversation and play an active role in the road-testing, experimentation and development of new Australian work.
