The Workshops

Workshops offer a unique blend of inspiration, creative replenishment, and methodology/best practices from Broadway – applied to your program for enhanced classroom learning.

2025 Workshop lineup includes:

  • Directing/Staging Group Scenes:  Your guide to organizing the chaos of large group scenes. Learn simple and straightforward methods that help you create dynamic, focused stage pictures that allow students to feel engaged as creative collaborators.
  • Directing/Focus on Text (Stranger Things): Working with a resident director, this session will focus on directing student actors in a scene from one of the Broadway shows we are seeing.
  • Playwriting/Finding Your Voice: this workshop encourages simplicity and clarity in story-telling.  We share practical tools that can easily be applied to your writing, ignite the imagination, and demystify the revision process and help you – and your students – find your unique voice.
  • Musical Theatre/Acting Through Song: Led by a distinguished Broadway performer and music director, this class will explore practical methods for coaching students on their musical performance, focusing on storytelling, specificity, and personalization. We will work on objectives, cultivating artistry and being in the moment with any type of song.
  • Sparking Joy in the Classroom: This large moderated group networking session is designed to connect you with your peers through mutual points of inspiration – and fill your cup creatively, spiritually and physically.
  • Broadway in Concert: Join BTW favorite and legendary Broadway music director/arranger David Loud as he returns with another of his delightful inquiries into the songs of our greatest theatre composers.
  • Broadway Theatre Tour: An exclusive private tour behind the scenes at either Broadway’s Hudson, home to the recent hit revivals of Merrily We Roll Along (starring Jonathan Groff & Daniel Radcliffe) and Once Upon a Mattress (starring Sutton Foster) and the new revival of Last Five Years (starring Nick Jonas) – or Disney’s New Amsterdam Theatre. Get ready for a sneak peek behind the curtain!
  • Ensemble Singing: Join the chorus and raise your voice under the baton of one of Broadway’s top conductors, as we explore breathwork, teamwork and collaboration.
  • Scenic Design: Embrace Your Space: Let go of your preconceived notions of what the show “should” look like – and open your mind to creative, cost saving and highly theatrical “solution opportunities” in your scenic design concepts and build. This workshop will explore how to best to outfit your own theatre space. We will discuss the principles of important scenic conventions and tease out exactly why they are practical and useful. Theatre-specific construction materials, potential alternatives for budget-conscious productions, and growing a stock of essential goods and key reusable elements will all be discussed.
  • Lesson Plan Sharing: This moderated session offers you the chance to exchange best practices with your peers from around the world.
  • Promoting Your Shows: Social Media as a driver of audience engagement, student participation and community enthusiasm.
  • Choreography for Non-Dancers: Learn how to take gesture and behavior and transform it into dance.
  • Broadway Dance Class (Smash): In this fast-paced session, you’ll learn a combination from one of the Broadway musicals we are seeing, taught by a company member from that show!
  • Backstage on Broadway: Meet a panel of Broadway performers, who will share their stories “up close and personal” in this popular session.
  • Writing About Theatre: This workshop will help you develop a set of exercises, parameters and lesson plans to help teach your students critical thinking – and how to evaluate, interpret and write about theatre.
  • Morning Stretch and Share: Start the day right with physical stretches, comparing notes on the show you saw the night prior.
  • Music Theatre International: Meet the team and preview new shows, new technology and resources to make your productions more successful.
  • Production Management: Explore new technology and methods for organizing and scheduling your rehearsals, tech and performances.

The Shows

The Broadway Teachers Workshop in NYC includes in your ticket FOUR HIT SHOWS, along with post show discussions.

Death Becomes Her

Madeline Ashton is the most beautiful actress (just ask her) ever to grace the stage and screen. Helen Sharp is the long- suffering author (just ask her) who lives in her shadow. They have always been the best of frenemies… until Madeline steals Helen’s fiancé away. As Helen plots revenge and Madeline clings to her rapidly fading star, their world is suddenly turned upside down by Viola Van Horn, a mysterious woman with a secret that’s to die for.

After one sip of Viola’s magical potion, Madeline and Helen begin a new era of life (and death) with their youth and beauty restored…and a grudge to last eternity.

Starring Tony Award® nominees Megan Hilty (Wicked, Smash), Jennifer Simard (Company, Disaster!), and Christopher Sieber (Spamalot, Company), with Grammy® Award winner Michelle Williams (Destiny’s Child, Chicago), Death Becomes Her, based on the classic 1992 film, is a drop-dead hilarious new musical comedy about friendship, love, and burying the hatchet…again, and again, and again.

Life’s a bitch and then you die. Or not!

Stranger Things

Young Jim Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob Newby’s sister won’t take his radio show seriously and Joyce Maldonado just wants to graduate and get the hell out of town. When new student Henry Creel arrives, his family finds that a fresh start isn’t so easy…and the shadows of the past have a very long reach.

From Netflix and the multi-award-winning Broadway producer Sonia Friedman Productions comes Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Winner of two Olivier Awards including Best Entertainment, this landmark production is brought to life by an award-winning creative team including director Stephen Daldry (The Crown, Billy Elliot, The Inheritance, The Hours, The Reader) and co-director Justin Martin (Prima Facie, The Inheritance). With stunning special effects, extraordinary performances, and a storyline that will keep you on the edge of your seat, this gripping, stand-alone adventure will take you right back to the beginnings of the Stranger Things story.

SMASH, inspired by the hit TV show, is finally coming to Broadway! A hilarious behind-the-scenes rollercoaster ride about the making of a Marilyn Monroe musical called Bombshell, it’s got all the iconic songs, kick-ass choreography, and backstage pandemonium that make Broadway the beloved institution it is today. Among them: Robyn Hurder, Brooks Ashmanskas, Krysta Rodriguez, Bella Coppola, Jacqueline Arnold, Caroline Bowman, John Behlmann, Kristine Nielsen and Casey Garvin to name just a few.The production will also be helmed by five-time Tony Award® winner Susan Stroman, and feature a score by Tony, Emmy®, and Grammy Award®-winning duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who wrote over two dozen songs for the television show (many of which will be heard in the musical), a book by Rick Elice and Tony winner Bob Martin, and choreography by Joshua Bergasse.
