Australian Theatre Live launches ATL ON DEMAND: EDUCATION – a new home for digital live performance in Australian classrooms!
Established as a Not-For-Profit organization and registered charity, Australian Theatre Live (ATL) records and distributes Australian live performance, prioritising accessibility, developing the local arts industry, and preserving an archive of its playwriting, performing and stage production heritage.
With a growing library of Australian theatre titles, ATL is pleased to offer productions suitable for primary and secondary students across Music, Drama, Dance, and Physical Education, spanning text-based theatre, physical theatre, opera, and circus. For several years ATL made their films and accompanying resources available for education use via Vimeo, building strong relationships with educators nation-wide.
In October of 2022 they launched their subscription site for the public – ATL ON DEMAND – which prompted the team to shift their focus to the education sector. Thus began the process of surveying Australian educators across English, Drama, Dance, Arts, and Music departments; a research and consultation phase through which 1,310 schools were contacted. Having now collated the data, they have built a new education-specific subscription platform: ATL ON DEMAND: EDUCATION, that has launched in September 2023.
This platform offers both a monthly and annual subscription option, priced at $150/month or $1,000/year, granting educators access to a growing catalogue of >24 Australian digital live performances accompanied by top-tier education resources, including education booklets, interviews, Q&As, behind-the-scenes footage, articles, production programs, writers’ notes, directors’ statements, production stills, review compilations, and production credits.
The catalogue includes Away (a Sydney Theatre Company & Malthouse Theatre co-production), Alex Buzo’s Norm and Ahmed (produced by ATL at Riverside Theatres), and Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew (a Queensland Theatre production). ATL’s research identified when accessing theatre, a barrier many schools operating regionally/rurally and/or in low socio-economic status (low SES) postcodes face is price-point. In response, ATL is pleased to offer a subsidized subscription for low SES and/or regional/rural schools of $35/month or $300/year.
Proceeds from ATL ON DEMAND: EDUCATION are funnelled back to theatre creatives, actors, playwrights & theatre companies, so that every subscription is contributing to the longevity and vitality of the theatre industry whilst helping to inspire and enthral the next generation of Australian artists. ATL is committed to making a positive and meaningful contribution towards both our arts and education sectors, ensuring that students and educators across the nation can access, enjoy, and learn from exceptional, local content, and the country’s greatest live performance artists.
