Word Travels presents the Australian Poetry Slam 2022 – National Final

Poetry is everywhere! In the jolt of a pothole, a river’s babble and the pixelated face of a lover… in the spotlight, in front of a crowd. Australian Poetry Slam (APS) combines stories, poems, theatre and hip-hop as writers slay the mic with words.

Watch The APS Slam Champion, Huda the Goddess deliver her finale performance before she hands over her crown.

Who will take out the grand prize? A writer’s festival tour worth over $10k. Warning: you may be chosen as a judge. Get ready to click, clap and scream for our nation’s best wordsmiths as they measure the pulse of the nation in 2022.

Huda the Goddess is the current Australia Poetry Slam Champion, winning the National Final on the 28th of November 2021. Huda is a spoken word poet, educator, mental health advocate, dancer and workshop facilitator. She describes poetry as one of her senses that has allowed her to turn her experiences into art.

In fact Huda blessed our ears with a spontaneous poem earlier this year at the 2022 APATA Award presentation for our Performing Arts Student of the Year, Leilani Collins.

Word Travels

Word Travels is a not-for-profit arts organisation founded by Miles Merrill that creates literacy programs for festivals, private companies, libraries, schools and cultural institutions around the Asia Pacific with a focus on developing performing writers.

“We believe that spoken word artists, poets, hip-hop artists, storytellers and monologists can develop an industry equal to that of actors, musicians and writers. Our main objective is to inspire people to tell their stories in creative ways, primarily through live performance.”
