APATA [Australian Performing Arts Teachers Association] is seeking to recruit Board Members who will provide strategic guidance, expert advice, and recommendations to APATA regarding the development, implementation, and evaluation of programming initiatives and the associations agenda for best representation of it’s members and the wider performing arts education community.

APATA’s mission is to celebrate and to represent all disciplines in the performing arts to lead best practice in education and to build the capability of performing arts communities by providing leadership, advocacy and connection for the benefit of education in arts, culture and performance. We connect teachers and educators with industry and leading experts across a multitude of experiences, knowledge and professional development.

Our vision is that performing arts education is the foundation that builds and nurtures skills and talents in the performing arts, connects emerging artists and skilled arts workers, develops future audiences and contributes towards a sustainable performing arts industry. Performing arts education starts in schools and studios across the nation teaching and developing skills, capability and connection.

Nurtured skills and talents across all disciplines of the performing arts are explored in education supporting the next generation’s journey, knowledge and interests for roles in front or behind the curtain, in purpose-built theatres and arenas to touring and outdoor applications. The heart of the performing arts industry is introduced and explored by students with teachers.

So, what is APATA all about? We connect through our online member community, industry events and programs, professional development, partnerships and national awards program. Whether you are located in regional Australia or city central, we warmly welcome all members of our national community to participate, collaborate, connect, and inspire.

We believe in sharing – ideas, knowledge, experience, expertise and deep insights to contribute towards a strong and sustainable performing arts program in education.

The Advisory Board will require skills and expertise in performing arts education, strategic planning, leadership, philanthropic experience, understanding of arts policy and performing arts education business, knowledge of the arts and cultural sector, and business acumen. While individual applicants will not necessarily possess all these attributes, priority will be given to applicants who are considered able to make the broadest contribution to the Advisory Board’s work. Importantly, the APATA Advisory Board is a working round table to address the challenges and capitalise on the opportunities including advocacy and contributing towards building a strong and sustainable performing arts education sector. Advisory Board Members serve in a voluntary capacity and selected from APATA Membership applicants as the first selection of appointment. Applicants outside of the APATA Membership selection may be invited to join at the discreation of APATA.

About the APATA Advisory Board Round Table

APATA [Australian Performing Arts Teachers Association] is the national peak body representing and supporting teachers, educators, and industry practitioners working and creating in performing arts education. APATA’s mission is to celebrate and to represent all disciplines in performing arts education to lead best practice, provide leadership, advocacy and connection for the benefit of education in arts, culture and performance. APATA’s committment to performing arts education, cultural diversity in performing arts education, welcomed collaboration opportunities, while safeguarding humility and integrity at all times drives APATA’s values and programs.

APATA is seeking ‘Expressions of Interest’ from experienced, professional, performing arts educators, and creative sector education leaders to join the APATA Advisory Board Round Table and drive performing arts and cultural education across the nation. The inaugural Advisory Board is being established now, with several positions available. Appointments will follow an EOI process, and will be for a two-year term, which may be extended to a second term.

The Advisory Board will consist of individuals with expertise, experience, and passion in various disciplines relevant to performing arts education to support leadership and provide expertise for APATA’s programming and performing arts education national agenda, including although not limited to, performing arts education in schools, academy’s and studio’s through to performing arts education provided by artists, cultural practitioners, industry leaders, and arts organisations. The Advisory Board’s high-level advice and direction to APATA will inform strategy and advocacy to develop and build a sustainable and considered performing arts education approach.

The Advisory Board’s role is to:

  1. Review programming strategies and provide feedback for enhancement.
  2. Identify emerging trends, themes, and opportunities relevant to APATA’s programming goals.
  3. Provide expert advice on the challenges performing arts education faces and what requires change.
  4. Identify key areas of advocacy to build a strong, sustainable and considered performing arts education sector.
  5. Offer recommendations on potential collaborations, partnerships, and guest artists.
  6. Advise on the selection and curation of performing arts education, events, and workshops.
  7. Evaluate the impact and effectiveness of implemented programming and advocacy initiatives.
  8. Provide input on strategies for engagement, outreach, and participation.
  9. Ensure programming aligns with APATA’s values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  10. Advocate collaborative and consider partnership opportunities that will enhance performing arts education for schools, teachers and students.

The Advisory Board will strive to reflect the diverse sector and performing arts disciplines it represents and encourages applications from all candidates representing that diversity.

What Is A Round Table?

A round table is described as a discussion or meeting where everyone is thought of as equal in importance. The individual aim of a round table discussion will vary in practice, although the APATA Round Table will be a series of collaborative ongoing meetings. It is anticipated 3 – 4 round table sessions will be held through an annual year. The role of the APATA Advisory Board Round Table is to provide a meeting at which appointed Members are enabled to discuss and strategise performing arts education with everyone appointed having an equal chance to express opinion and expertise to support programming and advocacy decision making. Important to note is the values and responsibiles of each appointed Member will need to be committed to teamwork, respect and a collaborative framework.

Round Table Platform

Round Table meetings can be attended by APATA Board Members both online or in-person. This is to support potential candidates across the nation to ensure access for metro and regional appointments as performing arts education is not bound by borders or barriers.

Recruitment Schedule

  • Shortlisted applicants will be contacted for an one-on-one interview with the APATA leadership team prior to appointment
  • Successful Advisory Board Members will be notified by APATA early 2025

Appointed members will be required to agree to the ‘Terms of Reference’ at the first meeting held in 2025.

Background

APATA seeks to develop diverse and dynamic programming and position advocacy that reflects the interests and needs of it’s community – performing arts education.

Purpose

The APATA Advisory Board will provide strategic guidance, expert advice, and recommendations regarding the development, implementation, and evaluation of programming initiatives and input to drive the associations national agenda and advocacy for performing arts education. The Advisory Board’s insights will support APATA in fostering creativity, inclusivity, and excellence in its programming and advocacy.

The Advisory Board’s high-level advice and direction to APATA will inform strategy and advocacy to develop and build a sustainable and considered performing arts education approach.

Scope

The Advisory Board’s scope is to:

  1. Review programming strategies and provide feedback for enhancement.

Composition

The APATA Advisory Board shall consist of individuals with expertise, experience, and passion in various disciplines relevant to performing arts education to support leadership and provide expertise for APATA’s programming and performing arts education national agenda, including although not limited to, in performing arts education:

  • Any performing arts discipline
  • Performing arts educators in schools, academy’s, studio’s and/or training institutions
  • Artists and/or arts organisation particpating in performing arts education
  • Industry participating in performing arts education
  • Philanthropists working in performing arts
  • Culture and diversity performing arts educators

Responsibilities & Proxy Nominations

Advisory Board Members shall commit to actively participating in Round Table meetings, contribute constructively to discussions, and fulfill the following responsibilities:
> Review materials provided by APATA in advance of meetings
> Share expertise, insights, and recommendations based on professional experience
> Respect diverse perspectives and contribute to a collaborative and inclusive decision-making process
> Maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information discussed in prepartion for and during meetings
> Serve as ambassadors and advocates for APATA programming initiatives and agendas within their respective networks

Should an APATA Advisory Board Member be unable to attend a scheduled meeting, a request for a proxy to attend must be received in writing to hello@apata.com.au one week prior to the scheduled Round Table meeting. The APATA leadership team will determine approval for nominated ‘proxy’ attendance.

APATA Advisory Board Meetings Round Table particpation is reviewed annually across appointed Members attendance and contribution.

Round Table Frequency & Format

The Advisory Board shall convene between three to four times per year, with meeting frequency scheduled and determined by APATA programming needs and scheduling constraints. Meetings may be conducted in person, virtually, or through a combination of both, as deemed appropriate by the APATA leadership team.

Reporting Structure

The Advisory Board shall report directly to the APATA Chair and APATA leadership team. The APATA Chair shall facilitate communication between Advisory Board Members ensuring that recommendations are duly considered and implemented where feasible and agreed.

Duration

The initial term of the APATA Advisory Board shall be two years, with the possibility of extension based on mutual agreement between Advisory Board Members and the APATA leadership team.

Amendment & Review

These ‘Terms of Reference’ may be amended or updated as necessary, with changes subject to approval by the APATA leadership team or designated management representative. An annual review of the Advisory Board’s effectiveness and relevance shall be conducted to ensure alignment with APATA’s evolving needs and priorities.

Adoption

These ‘Terms of Reference’ for the APATA Advisory Board are hereby adopted by APATA [Australian Performing Arts Teachers Association] and APATA Advisory Board Members and shall take effect upon approval.
