Virtual Online Workshop
ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP:
In the arts we’re united by our shared passion for storytelling, performance, and the power of performance to change lives. Sometimes though, we can confuse who we are with what we do, and our identity becomes wrapped up with our work.
This workshop aims to show how the skills of emotional agility can be vital in building resilience in the arts, and the importance of anchoring yourself in what is meaningful, especially in the context of these times of uncertainty.
In this workshop presenter Chris Cheers will not only provide skills for your own wellbeing, but also skills you can teach students to equip them to maintain wellbeing in the arts.
MEET YOUR PRESENTER:
Chris Cheers is a psychologist and lecturer with a focus on elevating mental health in the arts and LGBTIQ+ community.
Before training as a psychologist, Chris worked for arts organisations across Australia, and has brought this experience and understanding to provide workshops and mental health consultation to the Melbourne Fringe Festival, Rising Festival, Arts Wellbeing Collective, National Institute of Dramatic Arts, Australian Academy of Music, Back to Back Theatre, Arts House and various independent theatre productions and films.
“Chris was resourceful, empathetic and imaginative in his workshops for staff and artists. His detailed knowledge of the arts industry means he’s not just giving textbook advice – he’s giving hands-on, practical ways to support artists and artworkers, understanding the nitty-gritty of our sector.” – Simon Abrahams, Creative Director and CEO – Melbourne Fringe.
Chris is passionate about bringing psychology out of the clinic room and into the real world, and does this through his Instagram @chrischeerspsychology, and through the media, most recently featured on the 7am podcast, ABC Radio, The Guardian, and The Age.
